This week, 8 incidents involving damage to utilities, whilst excavating, were reported by one of our clients .
Whilst we carry out a significant number of full underground mapping surveys and mark-out / service clearance surveys for them already, service strikes still take place.
These strikes related to BT cables, LV and Gas, which could have resulted in serious injury.
This demonstrates that almost any excavation has the potential for service strikes, if the right level of information or approach to the excavation is not thorough enough.
How thorough is thorough enough?
PAS 128 has attempted to answer this question, however the balance between cost and perceived risk will always remain.
An evaluation of risk can be ascertained by reviewing existing statutory records / client owned records or a desktop study, followed by a full onsite underground mapping survey using EML & GPR.
