We must remind our surveyors to ensure that they properly close and shut manhole & drain covers when carrying out underground mapping survey works. A head count should also be completed at the end of each shift to ensure all surveyors are not, instead, wandering the sewer system beneath us.

The papers today have run an article about a Romford man who had to be rescued after spending 3 days and walking 6 miles underground after becoming trapped in a drain.

Reasons as to why the 48 year old entered the drain in the first place are unknown and Police have found no evidence of any broken manhole covers along the stretch of road where the wanderer is believed to have walked.

Upon rescue, the unfortunate man asked for a cigarette - hopefully a gas detector was used before he lit up!!
